Research Priorities for depressive, anxiety and other common mental disorders (CMD)

Cost effectiveness trials of interventions for CMD in primary and secondary care.

The impact of social interventions, for example, microfinance and interventions for gender-based and other forms of interpersonal violence, on the risk for CMD.

Health policy and systems research to scale up effective strategies for the detection and treatment of CMD in primary care and other routine health care settings.

The effectiveness of innovative and simple cognitive and behavioural strategies for treatment of depression and CMD, which can be administered by general physicians and community health workers.

Health systems and epidemiological research to determine economic and ‘hidden’ costs of untreated CMD and the benefits of reducing the disability/’days out of role’ of people with CMD.

Research Priorities for alcohol and other substance abuse disorders

Health policy and systems research to determine the most effective intersectoral (social, economic and population based) strategies to reduce consumption in high risk groups (particularly men).

The effectiveness of early detection and brief treatment methods that are culturally appropriate, that are implemented by non-specialist health workers in the course of routine primary care.

The effectiveness of new and innovative brief interventions for the prevention of alcohol abuse, particularly in adolescents and young adults.

Health systems and epidemiological research on how to quantify the economic benefits of reducing the disability/’days out of role’ of people with substance abuse.

The effectiveness of different delivery settings for substance use interventions such as schools, religious institutions, community groups, and health care settings.
