Session3 : Strategies for the future

 •  Mental health care users must be more actively involved in all Movement activities

 •

The future steps of the Movement need to be more clearly stated and a roadmap for future action should be mapped out by members who wish to contribute. In order to do this, a new section of the website should be developed where members can post their ideas about how we can move forward, including the structure and scope of Movement activities. There are a number of aspects that need to be discussed, including:

  ►

What does “mental health” entail? Moving forward, there is a need to develop a clear conceptualisation of what “mental health” entails within the Movement, and whether neurological  conditions such as epilepsy which also suffer similar neglect and stigmatisation should be included.

  ►

How should the organisation be structured? The structure of the organisation needs to be more clearly thought out. One suggestion is to have a rotating secretariat which is hosted by different organisations over a certain period, following the model of the People’s Health Movement. Another suggestion is to keep the advisory board members' terms fixed, and renew the board at regular intervals.

  ►

Reaching our membership targets and setting new goals. Our targets is to reach 1000 members and 100 institutional partners by October 2009. What will our targets be beyond this date?

  ►

How will the members of the Movement meet and communicate? There needs to be a clearer conceptualisation of how often the Movement will meet and in what format. Several of the participants to this first Summit commented on the difficulties in attending due to the cost associated with attending and the difficulties encountered at the venue. There were also some participants who sadly had their visas denied to enter Greece at all.

  ►

How can we involve the press? The press needs to be more engaged in the work of the Movement and this will require members who are familiar with communications becoming more involved and offering help where they can. Participants noted the extensive coverage given by the BBC One suggestion is to have a press award that is given out on an annual basis. Members of the Movement need to “know their message” and develop capacity in communicating with the media. In addition, there needs to be some discussion about how we as members communicate messages about mental disorders needs to be reframed and not seen as “hopeless”.

  ►

How can we revamp the website? The website needs to be revamped to be more user-friendly and attractive to users, as well as to encourage more interaction and discussion on the site. One suggestions is to include a compelling statement of purpose on the main page of the site. Other suggestions from members who have experience or interest in internet advocacy or who have ideas about how to improve the website will be very welcome.

  ►

What do website users and members think of our logo? There has been some debate about the logo that represents the Movement. What do people think of this logo and should there be any modifications to it?

Discussion boards will be set up for each of these issues. The Movement is looking for members to volunteer to moderate these - if your are interested fill this form now!
